- Description
- About the research of Prof. Korte:We study the cellular mechanism of learning, memory and forgetting. We are interested in how memories are formed and consolidated and in addition we study the cellular mechanisms of the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disease, like Alzheimer’s disesase. Synaptic plasticity is the ability of neurons to adjust the strength and the number of synapses due to changes in neuronal activity and it is believed that these changes are necessary for information storage. We found evidence, that the activation of the peripheral immune system and the activation of the immune system in the brain decreases the ability of neurons to be plastic. Infection of the CNS of viral or bacterial pathogens activated the immune system of the brain, the microglia cells. There is even evidence that infection the periphery can affect microglia cell. During ageing the activation of microglia cells can become maladaptive in a sense that it harms and damages neurons via the initiation of events that leads to the production of oxygen and NO radicals.Publications:(1) Sajikumar S, Morris RG, Korte M (2014) Competition between recently potentiated synaptic inputs reveals a winner-take-all phase of synaptic tagging and capture.
