- Nowadays, in digital arithmetic the almost only known approach of processing numbers is digit-parallel, but there are several reasons to favor the digit-serial solution. That is why this student thesis will take a closer look at the so called online arithmetic and the meaning of redundant number systems. The objective of this thesis is to design and implement a radix-generic online adding unit, which is able to realize arbitrary precision at runtime. Thereby special attention is given to the impact on consumption of resources and performance. It turned out that when using digit-serial arithmetic instead of the digit-parallel approach the number of interconnections between modules can be considerably reduced. Thus the used area on the chip and energy dissipation are reduced as well. This makes the approach used a win compared to the current state of the art and can be used as a starting point for further research. Diese Veranstaltung wird unterstützt von Professur Prozessordesign.
