- The angular momentum of light, both in the form of orbital and spin angular momentum, has been the subject of intense research in the last decades, from a theoretical as well as experimental point of view, resulting in many interesting applications in different fields of research, from microfluidics to quantum information. In this talk, after a short historical review of the concept of angular momentum of light, I will discuss how it can be decomposed in its orbital and spin part, the former connected to the field’s spatial structure, while the latter corresponding to the field’s polarization. In particular, I will discuss the role of the beam structure of the field on this decomposition. Recent developments concerning the introduction of OAM into the domain of optical pulses and its applications will also be discussed.
