Zusammenfassung

Microswimming usually denotes with active motion at low Reynolds numbers. It requires breaking of the time-reversal symmetry of the stroke responsible for motion. Several analytical approaches were able to provide profound insights in the mechanisms underlying this locomotion, however, in most cases, the stroke of the swimmer is prescribed a-priori. The disadvantage of this approach is the inability of the swimmer to respond to changes in the environment. This is circumvented in the approach where driving forces are imposed on the swimmer, while the stroke emerges as a result of hydrodynamic and other direct interactions in the system. The difficulty with this approach is that it is only available for a limited number of swimmer models. One of those, attracting increasing attention recently, is the class of bead-spring swimmers describing devices that are composed of spherical or ellipsoidal beads and springs connecting them with a force exciting and driving the apparatus. In this talk, I will present a general calculation scheme for the translational and angular velocity as well the efficiency, which is amenable to a wide range of bead-spring swimmers. The effect of shape, elasticity, and hydrodynamic interactions will be discussed in detail.
