Zusammenfassung

The investigation of Rydberg states that are created due to frustrated tunneling ionization in strong field processes has helped explain many strong field phenomena in the past decade. We present two new ways of how to make use of and control the creation of Rydberg states:

Firstly, we introduce the dependence on the ionization time distribution into the explanation for how fast the Rydberg yield decays with intensity. Taking account of nonadiabaticity effects in this ionization time distribution (and also in the velocity spread at the tunnel exit) shows how the Rydberg yield can be used as a quantity to test nonadiabatic effects, thus providing more accurate information about the strong field tunneling process itself.

In the second part, we will show how the duration of the laser pulse can be used to control both the yield and principal quantum number distribution of Rydberg atoms. In particular, it will become clear that low principal quantum numbers are less likely to 'survive' longer pulses. This is relevant to studies and applications that rely on the principal quantum number distribution of Rydberg atoms like the recently developed method of creating coherent extreme-ultraviolet radiation from Rydberg atoms, in which the occupation of low principal quantum numbers is crucial.
