abstract

Multiple Myeloma is a malignant disease originating from plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is characterized by malignant proliferation with hematopoietic insufficiency as a result of bone marrow infiltration and with plasma cell tumours in bone and extramedullary locations. Apart from malignant proliferation, plasma cells produce cytokines and monoclonal antibodies or antibody fragments (paraprotein). Cytokine production leads to immunosuppression, hypercalcemia and osteolytic lesions and paraproteinaemia can lead to hyperviscosity and renal failure. The common diagnostic criteria, disease monitoring and treatment options will be reviewed in the presentation.
