abstract

Growth occurs as a result of an increase in biomass generated by many individual cells based on their sampling of their immediate microenvironment. Yet many individual cells have to grow and proliferate appropriately to collectively generate organs of an appropriate size and shape. Finally, it is often necessary for organs to grow and mature sufficently to enable organisms to pass through certain developmental transitions. The mechanisms that link growth regulation at these three different levels (cellular, organ and organism) are poorly understood. My lab uses a genetic approach to identify mechanisms that regulate growth at each of these three levels.I will discuss our work on developmental and regenerative growth in Drosophila.
