e beginnings of modern measure theory\, the concept of amenability has bec
ome of great importance to infinite group theory and topological dynamics.
The study of amenable groups began in 1929 with John von Neumann\, who in
troduced them in order to explain why the Banach-Tarski paradox occurs onl
y for dimension greater than two. Since then amenable groups have proved i
nteresting to several areas of mathematics\, including operator theory and
ergodic theory. Recent developments have revealed a very fruitful connect
ion between structural Ramsey theory and topological dynamics\, which tran
slates combinatorial properties of structures into properties of topologic
al automorphism groups. Amenability and extreme amenability play the centr
al role in this correspondence. In the talk I will give an introduction
to amenability for discrete and topological groups\, discuss some example
s and related problems\, and sketch the connection with Ramsey theory ment
 ioned above.
