- Description
- Abstract SmB6 has recently returned to the limelight as the prime candidate for a topological Kondo insulator [1]: The first example of a system at the intersection of topological insulators and materials with strong electron correlation. Contradicting a growing consensus in the literature [2,3], we demonstrate by means of angle-resolved photoemission measurements that the experimentally observed surface states of SmB6 are of conventional, topologically trivial nature [4]. The relevance of this result is twofold: It helps resolve the long-standing discussion about the poorly understood low temperature properties of SmB6. In addition, it provides an essential result for the discussion whether topological insulators can have strong electron correlation. [1] Dzero, M., Sun, K., Galitski, V., Coleman, P. Phys. Rev.
