Description
Spin-orbit effect in materials can lead to fascinating properties. In this talk, we will discuss this issue taking two examples. One is of an Fe based spinel system, where we discover unexpectedly large spin-orbit effect assisted by Coulumb interaction driving the insulating ground state.[1] Another is of Cr based double perovskites, with 5d transition metal element (W,Re,Os) in the B' position. The magnetism in these compounds is found to be dictated by the interplay of the hybridization driven mechanism and the super-exchange mechanism.[2] The strong spin-orbit effect at B' sites makes them useful for the magneto-optic devices[3] as well as for possible designing of high-temperature multiferroic compounds.[4] [1] Electronic structure of FeCr2S4: Evidence of Coulomb enhanced spin-orbit splitting Soumyajit Sarkar, Molly De Raychaudhury, I.
