- Description
- The next edition of the Complex Systems Reading Group will take place on Wednesday, August 12th, 5pm in 2B1. The topic will be "Foraging and optimal search strategies". The idea is to approach the study of the statistical properties of foraging (animal search for food), to review briefly the "Lévy hypothesis", i.e. path lengths are distributed according to a power-law-like distribution, and to discuss the proposed mechanisms that could origin this observation. The first article is actually the chapter 2 from the review of Bénichou et al, Intermittent search strategies, Rev Mod Phys, (2011), which summarizes the original proposal and the current situation of the Lévy hypothesis, and the relationship with intermittent search. The second article is by Sims et al, Scaling laws of marine predator search behaviour, Nature (2008), where data from marine predators' movement is analyzed, as well as from their preys, discussing other possible causes of Lévy-distributed paths. The discussion is informal and anyone interested is welcome to join.
