Description
Topological insulators are characterized by symmetry-protected gapless boundary states. Particularly interesting are the three-dimensional topological insulators, whose electromagnetic response features a topological magnetoelectric effect which is closely related to the so-called chiral anomaly in relativistic quantum field theories. In the context of solid state physics the chiral anomaly arises as a second-quantized version of the Berry phase induced by the electromagnetic response of topological insulators. This property plays an important role in heterostructures involving both topological insulators and magnetic materials. In this talk we will consider theoretical and experimental aspects of bilayer and trilayer structures of the form FM/TI and FM/TI/FM from the point of view of quantum-field theoretic anomalies. The paradigmatic experimental example to be discussed within a field-theoretical approach is one where FM=EuS and TI=Bi2Se3, as there are recent experiments available with structures involving these two materials, including a recent experimental demonstration of room temperature proximity-induced ferromagnetism in an EuS/Bi2Se3 bilayer system. .
