- Description
- Given the ever-increasing complexity of modern HEP data analysis, multivariate analysis techniques have proven an indispensable tool for extracting the most valuable information from the data. Nevertheless even popular techniques like neural networks and boosted decision trees are often still met with scepticism and treated as a "black box". In this talk I will give an accessible introduction to neural networks and boosted decision trees, aiming at a more profound understanding for the common user in physics analysis. I will also briefly introduce TMVA, the Toolkit for Multivariate Data Analysis in ROOT, which provides a large variety of advanced multivariate analysis techniques for both signal/ background classification and regression problems. The talk will be followed by a hands-on TMVA tutorial on Friday.
