, you can find the original German abstract below.&amp\;lt\;/b&amp\;gt\;&a
mp\;#13\; &amp\;#13\; In 2028\, the Technical University of Dresden will b
e 200 years old. We take this imminent jubilee also as an opportunity to r
eflect on materials research history at our university during its darkest
times: many innovations developed in Dresden are hardly known. These inclu
de a number of developments in the field of materials science. The dark ye
ars of the nazi dictatorship were necessarily characterized by isolationis
m at German universities but also from innovative breakthroughs: One of
these developments is the now ubiquitous glass-fiber reinforced plastic (G
RP)\, which is used in a wide range of products\, such as in boatbuilding\
, glider aircraft construction\, vehicle construction\, printed circuit bo
ards and the construction industry. Until now\, it was assumed that this m
aterial was developed in the United States after 1945. However\, the lates
t research into the history of materials research presents a completely di
fferent picture. In the United States\, the topic of composite materials w
as first addressed in 1941\, when the U.S. Air Force was being restructure
d and the Scientific Advisory Group under the Hungarian physicist Theodore
von Kármán (1881–1963) was set up\, with the prospect of fundamental
development for the coming decade. At that time\, the adoption of GRP as a
structural material for the German Air Force were already being explored
in Germany. The scientific “initial spark” for GRP occurred as a secre
t project in the context of the development of the “Gertrud” device at
the TH Dresden and its materials testing office. Various departments and
university locations acted as an interdisciplinary research network\, such
as applied botany\, materials science\, constructive mechanical engineeri
ng and textile technology. As part of Allies industrial espionage efforts\
, some of the research results were transmitted to the UK by British agent
s in Dresden and Berlin. This lecture provides an insight into the develop
ment of GRP and the actors involved in it\, who\, in a pendulum swing betw
een research and the political constraints and restrictions of the time\,
sought and found new paths in materials science.&amp\;#13\; &amp\;#13\; &a
 mp\;#13\; &amp\;lt\;b&amp\;gt\;Original version in German&amp\;lt\;/b&amp\
as kommende Jahrzehnt gegründet wurde.
 nden.
