Description
Systems displaying quantum topological order feature robust characteristics that are attractive to quantum computing schemes. Topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) have proven indispensable in capturing quintessential attributes of systems with quantum topological order including, in particular, their possible lowest-energy anyon excitations. In this talk, we will examine topological theories that differ from those studied thus by further including distance-dependent interactions between the individual anyons. We find that the resulting low-energy excitations are not necessarily those of simple localized anyons nor their bound states. Rather, the gapped lowest-energy excitations may now feature anyons that densely cover the entire system. This leads to behaviors not conventionally described by TQFTs. The low-energy subspace of these interacting systems may be more resilient to thermal effects than those of topological systems (in particular, surface codes) that have been heavily explored as models for fault tolerant topological computation. Our analysis will revolve around mappings between topologically ordered systems and their dual theories that exhibit conventional spontaneous symmetry breaking orders. .
