- Description
- This talk will discuss the application potential of the 2-dimensional material graphene, shown experimentally at the University of Manchester in 2004 and awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. Benchmarking figures for graphene show remarkable properties, like ballistic conductance over several hundred nanometers, charge carrier mobilities of several 100.000 cm2/Vs, a very high current carrying capability and the highest known thermal conductivity of any solid, more than ten times greater than in metals like copper and aluminum. In addition, graphene acts as a broadband optoelectronic material. Naturally, its record-breaking properties have caught the attention of the electronic device physics and engineering communities with early demonstrators adding to the excitement. In the talk, I will discuss promises of graphene-based electronics and challenges encountered when integrating graphene into real devices. I will try to provide some answers to the question posed in the title: will we find graphene in our laptops and smartphones in the future? Finally, I will try to extend this question and discuss whether there might be future applications not WITH, but BECAUSE of graphene?
