- Description
-
I will talk about using passive antenna-based surfaces for assisting wireless communications and also opportunistically use them for doing wifi backscatter communication. I will start by presenting my work: ScatterMIMO to enable virtual MIMO using smart surfaces where I have built a smart surface using an array of low-cost antennas to increase the MIMO gain and realize the multiplexing capability of a MIMO communication system. Next, I will talk about how we can use these surfaces to enable a new modality of semi-passive backscatter communication and their use in sensor networks. To this end, I will talk about the challenges in using the backscatter tags with commodity WiFi infrastructure and my work SyncScatter, a low-power hierarchical wakeup solution developed to address this issue.
