- Description
- I will present two stories about the physics of multicellular systems. The first part of my talk will be about the mechanics of tissue folding. Taking the inversion of the green alga Volvox as a model developmental event, I will highlight the role of mechanical forces during development, and show how a model in which the cell shape changes driving inversion appear as variations of the intrinsic geometry of an elastic shell reproduces inversion quantitatively. This will lead me to discuss what one might term - with the nod to Turing that is customary in the field - the noisy basis of morphogenesis. The second part of my talk will be about systems that are multicellular only in the etymological sense: I will present recent results on the ecological role of phenotypic variation and phenotypic switching in communities of competing microbes.
