Mapping (multi-)cellular dynamics

Living organisms are complex systems that are shaped by components interacting across scales in space and time, ranging from molecules to cells to tissues and entire organs. Modern imaging techniques (such as light-sheet microscopy) provide unique insights into the inner workings of such systems across different scales. However, they typically deliver large amounts of data with complex internal structure and dependencies. Our research focuses on computational methods to extract the relevant patterns from raw data in order to develop computational models of information flow and pattern formation in cellular systems. In this talk, I will present our recent work on representing, quantifying and visualising cellular dynamics. I will also briefly sketch forthcoming projects on Reinforcement Learning of cellular dynamics and Deep Generative Models of spatio-temporal patterns in tissue morphogenesis.
Nico Scherf studied Informatics at Leipzig University and did his PhD at the Institute for Medical Informatics and Biometry (IMB) at TU Dresden. He worked as a postdoc in the Huisken Lab at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden and the Neurophysics Department at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig and now leads the research group "Machine Learning in Biomedical Informatics" at the IMB.
