Description
The reseach on shandite type Co3Sn2S2 reached fascinating results in from its discovery in Regensburg to recent breath-taking results from MPI-CPfS in Dresden. We briefly review the story of shandite type compounds from mineral shandite (Ni3Pb2S2) found in 1949 by Ramdohr in Tasmania to the synthesis of a range of M3A2X2 compounds with shandite (A = In, Sn, Tl, Pb) and monoclinic parkerite (A = Bi) type compounds. In 2000 a new decade of shandite research started in Regensburg with the discovery of half metal ferromagnetism of Co3Sn2S2, metal-to-insulator transition in Co3Sn2-xInxS2, and cubic Pd3Bi2S2. The concept of half antiperovskites (HAP) M3A2X2 = M3/2AX was developed for a systematic understanding of crystal and electronic structures and relations to e.g. Ni3MgC, K2Sn2O3. Investigations of the magnetism of Co3Sn2S2 in Dresden finally built the cornerstone of recent discoveries. The talk aims to discuss the development from early questions to the novel discoveries. R.
