Description
We start with the Falicov-Kimball model as an example of a correlated fermionic system, which is much simpler than the Hubbard model but shares some characteristic properties with the latter. In particular, it has a random gap at strong interaction and low temperatures. This model can also be considered as an example for disorder physics with discrete randomness, where Anderson localized and delocalized states in different phases exist. Generalizing the concept of a random gap, we discuss various phase diagrams, the existence of protected edge modes and the connection with a topological (Chern-Simons) field theory in two dimensions. Some ideas will be presented for the realization of these concepts in the Falicov-Kimball model.
