Description
This talk will present ongoing research funded by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy that aims to contribute to the implementation of Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) in Latin America, with focus on Buenos Aires. While there is expanding growing academic consensus about the social and environmental benefits of daylighting urban rivers, municipalities and practitioners in Buenos Aires – and elsewhere – face potential political or other challenges to their implementation, or appear to be unaware of their associated costs and benefits. The most common practice is, still, to invest in increasing the carrying capacity of underground grey infrastructure. To respond to this challenge, the presentation describes a Living Labs methodology that provides the baseline for the production of spatial scenarios for Buenos Aires' Medrano river. Scenarios were developed at a final-year urbanism studio at the University of Buenos Aires, in which the main exercise was to design a daylighting project in a culverted urban stream using a BGI approach. Daniel Kozak is an architect and urbanist, graduated with Diploma of Honor and CPAU Medal (summa cum laude) at the University of Buenos Aires, and a PhD graduate from Oxford Brookes University. At the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET), he is currently the director of the "Habitat and Energy" research center, and a researcher at the Center for Urban and Regional Studies. Also, he is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Buenos Aires and at Washington University in St. Louis, and the director of the Master in Design in Territorial, Urban and Architectural Heritage at the National University of St. Martin. Previously, Mr. Kozak was an Alfa-Ibis Doctoral Fellow at Oxford Brookes University and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University. He is co-author of “World Cities and Urban Form: fragmented, polycentric, sustainable?” (Jenks, Kozak and Takkanon, Routledge, 2008), and “Sustainability II: Criteria and standards for promoting urban sustainability in Buenos Aires” (Kozak and Romanello, CPAU, 2012). The presentation will be held in English!
