Materials modification by ion beams and femtosecond lasers for photonic applications

- Energetic ion beams and femtosecond lasers are efficient techniques for materials modification. By using ion beams with diverse parameters, the refractive index of optical materials (e.g., crystals, glass) can be modified through the interaction of incident ions and target atoms, leading to many applications such as lasing, nonlinear frequency conversion, etc. in waveguide structures.
Particularly, by using He ion implantation combined with wafer bonding method, one can produce high-quality crystalline lithium niobate thin films (with thickness less than 1 μm), which can be used as unique platforms for electrooptic, nonlinear optical, and quantum photonic devices.
Moreover, embedded metallic nanoparticles (e.g., Au or Ag) are synthesized in dielectrics by direct ion implantation, which significantly enhance the optical nonlinearities of the substrates, enabling new applications of the materials. In addition, ion beam technique has been realized as an efficient method to tailor the properties of 2D materials by defect engineering.
Similarly, as a powerful tool for 3D materials engineering, femtosecond laser writing has been utilized to produce low-loss waveguides with diverse geometries in dielectrics. With special designs, 3D waveguides have been implemented via laser writing approach.
These structures receive a number of intriguing applications in photonics, such as wavelength conversion, lasing, amplification, sensing, and quantum information processing. In this talk, I will introduce the fundamentals and recent progress on this topic.
