Description
In this study, using 3 Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examine the dynamics of stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) to pure tones in the human auditory thalamus (left medial geniculate body, MGB) in 20 individuals with dyslexia and in 20 matched neurotypical controls. The purpose of the study is to explore whether this adaptation is atypical in individuals with dyslexia and whether higher-order expectations influence the response to deviant tones. Tabas et al. (MS) found that predictable deviants elicit significantly weaker responses than unpredictable ones in neurotypical participants. These findings indicate that SSA in auditory thalamus and auditory midbrain may be elicited by predictive-coding-like organization. In light of previous findings of higher-order modulation of the auditory thalamus during speech-related tasks, we here suggest that the cortico-thalamic interactions are organized in a predictive-coding manner, and propose that these interactions are atypical in individuals with dyslexia. We hypothesize that SSA to pure tones is similar in individuals with dyslexia and neurotypical controls, but that there is no effect of higher-order expectations in the neural responses elicited by the deviants in dyslexia, contrary to neurotypical controls. The study is done in collaboration with Dr. Alejandro Tabas and Prof. Katharina von Kriegstein.
