- Description
- Antiferromagnetic spintronics is a new fast developing field which focuses on electrical and optical manipulation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. In the presence of spin current antiferromagents (AFs) show nontrivial dynamics which differs from the dynamics of ferromagnetic materials and provides qualitatively new features of AF-based devices. Here I make an overview of the current-induced dynamics of AFs in nanoparticles and textures) emphasizing the differences between ferro- and antiferromagnetic cases. The main difference between ferro- and antiferromagnetic dynamics steams from strong exchange coupling between AF sublattices which is obviously absent in ferromagnets. This coupling is responsible for the several order of magnitude enhancement of AF frequencies, absence of Walker breakdown and potentially faster domain wall motion, and absence of the Magnus force as a motive force for AF skyrmion. Moreover, due to exchange coupling, AF nanoparticles are natural spin torque oscillators with operating frequencies in THz range and hence can be used to fill the “THz gap” in modern electronics. Complicated, compared to ferromagnets, magnetic structure of AFs also implies variety of the possible spin torques that can induce AF dynamics. One of important example is given by the recently observed Néel spin-orbit torque which induces effective switching between the different AF states and has no counterpart in ferromagnetic materials. These and other peculiarities of AF dynamics open a way for new functionalities and make AF prospective materials for spintronics applications. .
