- Description
- Bioinspiration is an attractive concept for the creation of new materials. In this talk, examples of recent insights on biological materials systems will be given. As a key example, the 3D micropatterning of surfaces for the control of mechanical surface functionalities will be described. Novel adhesive surfaces based on the “gecko principle” were developed with special support from numerical modeling and mechanistic understanding. The simulation of the adhesion performance as a function of materials and structure parameters allowed us to rationally optimize our structures. New experiments using in situ observation give considerable new insights on the collective detachment behavior. Their unique properties make artificial Gecomer® surfaces interesting for novel robotic pick-and-place systems, assembly machines, in space technology and in biomedicine.
