Description
Strong-field, ultrafast, and attosecond physics are promising research avenues resulting from remarkable developments in laser technologies during the last decades. In accord with the common definition, a "strong" field corresponds to the field strength comparable to that experienced by an electron in a hydrogen atom. The "ultrafast" time scales typically refer to a laser pulse length of the order of femtoseconds. In contrast to this, attosecond physics studies dynamics of quantum systems on the timescale less than a femtosecond. The time scales mentioned here imply a great diversity of possible applications in science and technology. We briefly overview these applications along with some nonlinear phenomena originating from the interaction of strong laser pulses with atoms and molecules. Semiclassical models applying a classical description of an ionized electron are one of the widely used theoretical approaches in strong-field physics. We discuss trajectory-based simulations of various strong-field phenomena, including above-threshold ionization, capture into Rydberg states, nonsequential double ionization, etc. Finally, we analyze semiclassical perspective of strong-field holography with photoelectrons – a new technique for time-resolved molecular imaging.
