 es of the neural stem cells in the adult mammal hippocampus. Their populat
 ion size\, rate of activation and mitotic potential\; their activation-cou
 pled astrocytic differentiation and entry into a senescence with aging...a
 ll these characteristics determine the true neurogenic potential of each i
 ndividual organism. Neurological disorders\, especially those associated w
 ith neuronal hyperactivation\, such as epilepsy\, profoundly affect neural
  stem cell properties affecting neurogenesis. For instance\, after seizure
 s\, neural stem cells transform into reactive astrocytes abandoning their 
 neurogenic program\, an unexpected phenomenon which mechanisms we are curr
