Description
Initiated by the discovery of the quantum spin Hall effect in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells, the last decade has witnessed the rise of electronic quantum phases jointly characterised by non-trivial topological properties and symmetry. While the theoretically conceived plethora of distinct topological electronic insulators, superconductors, and semimetals keeps expanding, the next steps towards optimized, and hence technologically accessible, experimental realization bring up new challenges at different frontiers. This includes the quantitative and qualitative effect of electronic interactions, the ab-initio identification of most promising material candidates, and the development of ideal observables to resolve the interplay of symmetry, topology, and quantum entanglement. It is all those directions to which model engineering of topological quantum matter crucially contributes. In this talk, at the prototypical example of quantum spin Hall effect, we illustrate how model engineering serves to condense the essential formation mechanism of topological electronic states beyond their mere classification, and how this stimulates new paths to formulate material candidates with potentially improved properties.
