- Description
- Emplacement in deep geological formations is internationally considered the best option for the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste. A detailed thermodynamic description of the aqueous geochemistry of the actinides is of high importance for the understanding of migration and retention processes of actinides. This work focuses on the complexation of Np(V) with sulfate and malonate. The complexation is studied by near infrared (NIR) absorption spectroscopy as a function of temperature and ionic strength. Applying the specific ion interaction theory (SIT) and the integrated van’t Hoff equation the thermodynamic functions and the binary ion-ion interaction parameters for the different complexation reactions are obtained. Furthermore, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is applied to determine structural parameters of the Np(V) complexes yielding important information on the bonding and coordination modes of the ligands.
