Description
An alternative to Density Functional Theory are electronic structure calculations based on wavefunctions. They have the advantage that one can apply well-controlled quantum chemical methods for approximations. However, they require to get around the exponential wave problem, i.e., the exponential increase of the dimension of Hilbert space with increasing electron number.
