SUMMARY:Birkholz: How MRI data can turn into a synthetic voice
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jun.-Prof. Peter Birkholz\nInstitute of Speaker: TU Dr
 esden\nTopics:\nMedizin\, Psychologie\, Gesellschaft\, Philos.\, Erzieh.\n
Location:\n Name: TUD Falkenbrunnen (FAL 156\, \, Chemnitzer Str. 46b)\n
   Street: \n City: 01187 Dresden\n Phone: \n Fax: \nDescription: In th
is talk I will briefly describe the generation of speech by a technique ca
lled articulatory speech synthesis. This kind of synthesis differs from th
e conventional method of speech synthesis\, which merely concatenates pre-
recorded segments of speech. In contrast\, articulatory synthesis models t
he human speech apparatus and simulates acoustic wave propagation and aero
dynamics inside the vocal tract. In this respect I will detail how MRI sca
ns of the vocal tract of a person helped to model the speech apparatus for
this kind of synthesis. Finally\, I will outline some fascinating prospec
ts of this kind of speech synthesis.
