Beschreibung
About the research of Mina Gouti: Cells of the spinal cord and somites arise from a shared, dual-fated progenitor population located at the posterior tip of the elongating embryo. I have recently succeeded in generating this neuromesodermal progenitor population (NMPs) in vitro from mouse and human pluripotent stem cells by activating Wnt and Fgf signalling in a timely manner in order to recapitulate in vivo development. Similar to NMPs in vivo, these cells co-express the neural factor Sox2 and the mesodermal factor Brachyury and differentiate into neural and paraxial mesoderm in vitro and in vivo. My future research capitalizes on the use of this system to understand the mechanisms regulating the neural versus mesodermal cell fate decision in the tailbud and the subsequent specification of different types of spinal cord neurons and muscle cells. Efficient generation of these cell types holds great promise for the study, modelling and ultimately treatment of neuromuscular diseases. Publications: Gouti M, Metzis V, Briscoe J.
