- I will give a general introduction to the inverse Ising problem, that is, the problem of inferring the couplings and fields of an Ising model given a collection of configurations of the system sampled at equilibrium. Highlighting the relation between maximum likelihood inference and thermodynamics, we then propose a classification of solutions to the inverse Ising problem according their associated thermodynamic potentials. Reflecting the relation between statistical inference and thermodynamics, this classification thus sheds light on the nature of many approximations that have been developed for such an inference problem over the last decade or so. We will also quickly discuss the pseudo-likelihood formulation of the problem, which remained not well-known to physicists until recently, but turns out to be the way to one of the best solutions around.
