Beschreibung
This lecture explores a series case studies of urban neighborhood redevelopment facilitated by an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort between university faculty/students, community partners, and local organizations/agencies. The target areas are urban neighborhood in Columbus Ohio, USA. These neighborhoods are experiencing the same sprawl-driven population loss and economic decline facing many inner city communities in the United States. In these cases, local redevelopment is hampered by the deteriorating environment. Moreover, the lack of access to recreational facilities and old houses without proper maintenance, repairs, and upgrades are subjected to elevated energy use, high utility costs, and poor environmental quality, placing a burden on remaining residents. The projects seek to increase community awareness of and involvement in sustainable housing and neighborhood development. Findings from these projects provide baseline results for more wideranging studies and facilitate informed decision making for the creation of healthy and sustainable urban environments. Dr. Jesus J. Lara is an associate professor in the Knowlton School’s city and regional planning section. His research and pedagogy are centered on sustainable urban design, latino urbanism, community development, and sociocultural factors in community design, from urban environments and poverty stricken areas to empty suburban malls and commercial areas at the intersection of upscale developments and highway commerce, and university‐community partnerships. Dr. Lara received his doctorate in environmental design and planning from Arizona State University in 2006, a Masters in urban planning and a Masters in landscape architecture from the University of Southern California in 2001, and a Bachelor of Science's degree in landscape architecture from California State Polytechnic University in 1994. He was a Fulbright Fellow at Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University, the Netherlands, in 2003-2004.
