Slow electrons and short light pulses Slow electrons appear under a variety of circumstances when matter is interacting with short and high-frequency laser pulses. This is true, e.g., for ionisation where slow electrons emerge in spectra generated with intense mid-infrared pulses, as well as for slow electron “evaporating” from an atom or molecule under an ultrashort light pulse. Other examples refer to terahertz streaking and to the cosmos of bound slow electrons, i.e., Rydberg dynamics, in the ultra cold environments as well as in short pulse interaction. There, already a few-cycle near-infrared pulse can intercept Rydberg orbits modifying resonances with the corresponding q-parameter and opens new perspectives for quantum control. Yet, slow electrons are an experimental challenge due to the high energy resolution required and they are computationally demanding since a long propagation time is necessary. The focus days will offer the chance for an exchange of ideas as well as the exploration of synergies with and among experts on the different aspects of slow electrons.
