- We introduce a general law of growth and replication, give proofs of its validity and discuss some applications. It was discovered that the answer to the growth puzzle resides both in the physical, geometrical and biochemical realms. Geometrical characteristics of an organism uniquely define the distribution of nutritional resources between maintenance needs and biomass synthesis, through the growth ratio parameter, which monotonically decreases during growth. In turn, the fraction of nutritional resources diverted towards biomass synthesis defines the amount of synthesized biomass, and through this, the composition of biochemical reactions. In such a way, due to decreasing amount of synthesized biomass, organisms progress through the whole growth cycle. Using the growth equation, which is a mathematical representation of the general growth law, we discovered two qualitatively distinct types of individual growth, computed growth curves for amoeba, fission yeast, its mutant and S. cerevisiae and found good correspondence with experiments, discovered a growth deceleration mechanism based on organisms’ geometry, etc. We show that possible applications of the general growth law in different areas of biology are numerous and very promising.
