- We introduce and investigate generalizations of Banach limits (i.e. normalized positive linear functionals on the space of bounded sequences, which are invariant under "shift" operators determined by the three-term recurrence relation of orthogonal polynomial sequences). We characterize the existence of such Banach limits by growth conditions of the orthogonal polynomials. Moreover we derive relations between thesegrowth properties and the support of the orthogonalization measure. Connections to positive definiteness and Reiters condition P1 and P2 are presented.
