- Imagine a system so indecisive that it cannot even agree with itself—something that might model anything from myself at an ice-cream shop to an academic council’s deliberations. Not satisfied, you replicate this system n times and let the copies interact, hoping they will equilibrate. Spoiler: they do not. So you realize your mistake and make the wise decision to send n to zero. Too bad, it is too late: the symmetry has already been broken, leaving you with an infinite-dimensional order parameter in your hands, a permanent reminder of your failures at every scale.
