SUMMARY:Gunawardena: The role of energy in cellular information processing
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jeremy Gunawardena\nInstitute of Speaker: Pompeu Fabra
  University\, Spain\nTopics:\n\n Location:\n Name: MPI-CBG (MPI-CBG CBG L
 arge Auditorium)\n Street: Pfotenhauerstraße 108\n City: 01307 Dresden\
 n Phone: +49 351 210-0\n Fax: +49 351 210-2000\nDescription: Energy expe
nditure is essential to life but cellular information processing can take
place without it. Bacterial gene regulation\, for example\, appears not to
rely on it. We have\, in consequence\, adopted an equilibrium thermodynam
ic perspective for thinking about how genes work\, even in eukaryotes. I w
ill discuss theoretical results based on the \"linear framework\" that cha
racterise the limits\, or Hopfield barriers\, to information processing at
equilibrium and the challenges of undertaking compelling experiments to r
eveal the impact of energy expenditure in eukaryotic genomes. More broadly
\, I will suggest that this research programme shows how mathematical theo
ry can sometimes get behind the data\, to uncover a conceptual landscape t
hat leads to new kinds of experiments and new ways of interpreting data.
