Beschreibung
Since 1974, Cyprus is a de-facto partitioned island and suffers from a severe depletion of water-related ecosystems. Each community pursues its own target goal for adequate water provision by relying on one-sided technological solutions or ethnic sponsors. Although water has not been a driver for conflict in Cyprus, it can be an entry point to conflict transformation. The gender aspect of the conflict has already been investigated, but it is rare to find any studies addressing the water, conflict transformation, and gender nexus with a pragmatic transdisciplinary approach. This research suggests using water and gender relations as entry points to conflict transformation for inclusive societal peacebuilding in Cyprus. The final analysis provides insight into women’s roles in water management and conflict transformation in similar contexts. The seminar “Women in Water Management and Conflict Transformation: Exploring Some of the Possibilities, Conditions and Challenges for the case of Cyprus” addresses questions, including: What are the socioecological sensitivities and constraints of the state in creating integrated water resource management mechanisms? How can unilateral water policies of ethnically separated communities be replaced with a bi-communal water resource management approach across the boundaries? How can gender-responsive water resource management strategies be developed for more societally inclusive peacebuilding? Bio Dr Emine Eminel Sülün is a full-time faculty member in the International Relations Department at Near East University (Nicosia), researching security and energy geopolitics in the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus conflict. She completed her PhD in International Relations at the Middle East Technical University (Turkey) in January 2016. Dr Sülün holds a BA in Sociology from Middle East Technical University and a MA in International Politics from the University of Bath (United Kingdom). Between 2012 and 2016, Dr Sülün taught at Eastern Mediterranean University (Famagusta) as a part-time member of staff in the Political Science and International Relations Department. Nexus Seminar Series UNU-FLORES, in collaboration with PRISMA – Centre for Sustainability Assessment and Policy on behalf of TU Dresden, is delighted to present the Nexus Seminar Series. The joint seminar series, which launched in 2015, features lectures by senior scholars that highlight all dimensions of research on the Nexus Approach, ranging from hands-on implementation strategies to theoretical debates. The Nexus Seminars serve not only as a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation between UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden but also as a medium for the partner institutions to discuss their research with a broader audience. Taking place once a month, each seminar is open to the public and under the current circumstances will be delivered via a virtual Zoom videoconference.
