- Brain structures that support spatial cognition by encoding one’s position and direction have mostly been studied in simple two-dimensional laboratory setups, whereas humans and other animals also move vertically in a three-dimensional (3D) world. In this talk I will describe a series of fMRI and behaviour experiments that investigated 3D place, direction, grid codes while participants explored various 3D virtual environments, including a multi-level building, a microgravity spaceship, and curved surface.
