- Beschreibung
- Oleg Timoshkin is a professor at the Irkutsk Limnological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the world leading authority on the endemic invertebrate diversity of Lake Baikal. Further, he is a close collaborator on our Baikal field station project, which endeavours to make the unique planarians in the lake accessible to comparative genome analysis. Oleg's talk will feature beautiful pictures of the wild lake, giant flatworms and the fascinating evolutionary conundrum of why so many animal lineages underwent such massive species radiation within Baikal. Moreover, Oleg will address the conservation challenges that increasing pollution entails for the unique eco system. Although the talk is unlikely to feature confocal images, machine learning or similar CBG topics, you can nevertheless expect an engaging talk on ecological phenomena that ultimately shape the biology we study in the lab.
