SUMMARY:Schwab: CURIOSITAS talk: \"Energy – our Life-Blood. Where does it
come from\, where does it go?\"
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Ekkehard Schwab\nInstitute of Speaker: BASF\nTopic
 s:\nChemie\n Location:\n Name: MPI-CPfS (Seminarraum 1+2\, Nöthnitzer St
 raße 40\, 01187 Dresden)\n Street: Nöthnitzer Straße 40\n City: 01187
Dresden\n Phone: \n Fax: \nDescription: Following the motto “use numb
ers\, not adjectives”\, the talk will put the political discussion about
renewable energy and climate change in the context of the dimensions of o
ur current energy system. Throughout history\, the access to affordable en
ergy sources has driven the development of human societies. Overall\, ther
e is a significant correlation between standard of living and per capita u
se of primary energy. This correlation\, however\, also shows that the sam
e standard of living can be achieved with a remarkable spread in per capi
ta energy consumption . In conclusion\, the reduction targets for climate
gas emissions most probably will only be realistic if a combination of re
placing fossil based primary energy with renewable (solar) sources and a m
uch more efficient use of energy is achieved. The latter is not only a tec
hnical but as well a social and behavioral topic.
