There is strong evidence that sensory thalamus responses are modulated when humans recognise speech and that this task-dependent modulation is behaviourally relevant. We have previously interpreted these findings within a dynamic predictive coding model of cortico-subcortical interactions. In the context of visual speech recognition, one key prediction of the model is that a reduction in the function of relevant visual cortical regions leads to a reduction in the task-dependent modulation of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN, visual thalamus) and in the visual speech recognition performance (lip-reading). Our aim is to investigate whether the cortical area V5, that is highly sensitive to visual motion, might be a source of the task-dependent LGN modulation. In a first step towards testing our hypothesis, we want to investigate whether a stimulation of V5 influences the lip-reading performance. Therefore, we plan to establish a TMS-experiment with the factors stimulation (V5 vs. sham) and task (lip-reading vs. face identity). We expect that TMS over V5 will disrupt the subjects’ lip-reading performance, compared to sham, while this difference should be absent for a face-identity task. We plan to localise the point of TMS on an individual participant level with a functional MRI localiser for V5.
