Beschreibung
There is a rapidly increasing demand for permanent (PMs) in nowadays technological applications strongly driven by renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles. Europe faces a problem to achieve a sustainable technological development with no bottleneck originated from the lack of resources and the monopoly by Asia on the rare-earths (REs). The presentation will begin with a short introduction on criticality aspects of RE elements used in PMs and the impact on technology. A well-focused diversification of materials in the PM market is the current objective followed by many research groups and industry. Results on improved nanostructured ferrites starting from industrial PMs residues will be shown, aiming to achieve the “closing the loop” goal in the manufacture processing [1]. Advances done on RE-free MnAl-based powder will be discussed, obtained by using a rapid-milling method that allows development of coercivity in unprecedented short milling times of 30-270 s [2]. The seminar will conclude with some examples on the fabrication of meters long magnetic filament of diverse PM materials for advanced 3D-printing technologies [3], as a technological approach to reduce the use of critical raw materials.
