“Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in Rare-Earth Tetraborides"

- We present a minimal microscopic description of the unusual magnetization plateaus observed in experiments on rare-earth tetraborides [1-3] in terms of an Ising-spin Kondo lattice model on a two-dimensional Shastry Sutherland lattice. The model is studied via hybrid simulations which combine exact diagonalization for fermions and classical Monte Carlo for localized Ising spins. Many unusual magnetically ordered states are uncovered in the experimentally relevant parameter regime. The stability of such magnetic states finds its origin in the electronic contribution to the total energy which is completely missed in spin-only models [4]. The existence of magnetization plateaus in the rare-earth tetraborides is a direct consequence of the existence of such exotic magnetic states. We are able to explain magnetization plateaus at fractions of 1/9, 1/3, 7/15 and 1/2. We further present numerical results on magneto-transport and compare with the available experimental data [5].
