SUMMARY:Vollmer: Exploring the Nanoscale with Optoplasmonic Sensors

 of Exeter\, Living Systems Institute\, UK\nTopics:\nMaterialien\, Physik\n
Location:\n Name: IFW (D2E.27\, IFW Dresden)\n Street: Helmholtzstraße

device building blocks\, such as optical nano/microcavities and plasmonic
nanostructures\, lie at the forefront of sensing and spectrometry of trace
biological and chemical substances. My laboratory is developing a new cla
ss of nanophotonic architectures by combining optically resonant dielectri
c nano/microcavities with plasmonically resonant metal nanostructures to e
nable detection at the nanoscale with extraordinary sensitivity. Initial d
emonstrations include single-molecule detection and even single-ion sensin
 g. The coupled photonic-plasmonic resonator system promises a leap forward
in the nanoscale analysis of physical\, chemical\, and biological entitie
 s. I will review our work in this burgeoning field of optoplasmonic sens
ors. I will also talk about our most recent advances in localising light a
t the nanoscale in disordered 2D photonic crystals.
