- Enzymatic biobatteries are emerging energy storage devices which stimulate nature biochemical reaction in human body to convert chemical energy into electricity by using biocatalyst enzymes in safe way. An important goal of the biobattery study is to realize an implantable application. In order to achieve it, minimizing the biobattery to make implantable application possible is a key step. In previous research, we have realized a long biobattery discharge with stable power Output of more than 450 h in phosphate buffered saline and 170 h in human serum as big device. The biggest challenge in present work is to gain high power output and continuous discharge. The power density reduces a lot in micro size because of reduced reaction surface and limited immobilization. In this seminar, I will present our new research enzymatic microbiobattery on chip with multi reaction pool (see Figure 1). The micro reaction pool of battery could better immobilize more enzyme in the electrode and extend the reaction surface when compared to 2D planar electrode. Furthermore, the lattice on the electrode could increase electrons transfer surface to enhance power output. Beneficial from the advantages of this structure, for the first time, the new battery reached a continuous long discharge time more than 1500s in the human serum as a micro enzymatic biobattery. This device could not only be used as an energy resource, but also work as a micromotor to supply electricity at the same time if it is rolled up and immobilize the hole enzyme system of glucose metabolisms.
