- Parenting involves all sorts of challenges to primiparous (first-time) parents. It influences many aspects of them including both emotional state and cognitive function. However, much of the literature around postpartum change investigated the emotional change of mothers (e.g., post-partum depression). Concerning the change of cognitive function, research has focused on the development of infants and children. The comparison between new parents’ cognitive function pre- and postpartum was surprisingly rare. Yet, little is known of how parenting processes affect the human brain and cognitive functions. My hypothesis is that the parenting process is in fact comparable to an intensive and long-term training regarding several aspects of cognitive function. Moreover, this dynamic and natural “training program” follows the development of the infant. In this talk, I want to present the experimental design of a prospective longitudinal study which plan to measure first time parents’ (n=30 pairs) cognitive function and its neural basis at selected time points of motor developmental milestones of infant. At each time point, neural activation will be measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), meanwhile the behavioural performance will be recorded, and grey matter (GM) structure will be measured by brain morphometry voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Whether parenting can dynamically influence the brain functioning, the behavioural performance in cognitive assessment, and the GM structure of the human brain will be investigated.
